Discover Kannappa Catering & Indian Cuisine

If you’re anywhere near 501 N Fairview St, Santa Ana, CA 92703, United States and craving bold spices, slow-simmered curries, and the kind of biryani that perfumes the whole table, Kannappa Catering & Indian Cuisine deserves a spot on your list. I’ve visited more than once-once for a casual weekday dinner and another time for a family-style catering pickup-and both experiences gave me a clear sense of how seriously this kitchen takes authentic Indian food.

The first thing you notice when you scan the menu is the range. From South Indian staples like dosas and idlis to North Indian favorites such as butter chicken, tikka masala, and tandoori platters, the selection reflects real regional diversity. India’s culinary landscape is vast, and according to research published by the National Restaurant Association, diners in the U.S. increasingly look for authentic global flavors rather than generic “curry” dishes. That shift is obvious here. The sambar tastes tangy and layered, not watered down. The chicken biryani arrives fragrant, with long-grain basmati rice cooked separately and then layered with spiced meat-a traditional dum cooking method that traps steam to intensify flavor.

On my first visit, I ordered a masala dosa and a side of goat curry. The dosa came out crisp and golden, folded around a spiced potato filling. What stood out was the texture contrast: crunchy exterior, soft center, and a coconut chutney that tasted freshly ground. The goat curry, meanwhile, was slow-cooked until tender. Anyone who’s worked with tougher cuts of meat knows they require low heat and time to break down collagen properly. You can tell the kitchen respects that process.

The catering side of the business is just as impressive. For a small birthday gathering, we ordered trays of vegetable korma, chicken 65, and paneer tikka. Everything was packaged carefully, still hot at pickup, and portioned generously. In catering, consistency matters more than presentation, and here the flavors held up even after transport. The spices were balanced, not overpowering, which is key when serving guests with varying spice tolerances. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, spices like turmeric, cumin, and coriander don’t just add taste-they also carry antioxidant properties. While no one is eating curry strictly for health benefits, it’s nice to know the ingredients bring more than just heat.

Reviews from locals often highlight the hospitality, and I’d agree. The staff takes time to explain dishes, especially if you’re new to Indian cuisine. If you’re unsure about the difference between korma and vindaloo, they’ll break it down clearly-korma being creamy and mild, often made with cashew or coconut paste, while vindaloo leans tangy and spicy with vinegar and chili. That clarity builds trust, especially for first-time diners.

Another thing worth noting is portion size. Many Indian restaurants either overdo cream or skimp on protein. Here, the balance feels right. The chicken tikka is charred just enough from the tandoor oven, locking in moisture without drying out the meat. Tandoor cooking, a clay-oven method recognized globally for its high-heat roasting, gives food that slightly smoky edge that’s hard to replicate with standard ovens.

Location-wise, being in Santa Ana makes it accessible for both quick takeout and larger catered events across Orange County. Parking is straightforward, and the setting is casual and family-friendly. It’s not a flashy fine-dining spot, but that’s part of the appeal. The focus is clearly on flavor, tradition, and consistency rather than décor.

If there’s one limitation, it’s that peak hours can get busy, and wait times may stretch a bit on weekends. Still, that’s often a sign that locals trust the food. When a place builds repeat customers in a competitive dining scene, it usually means the kitchen delivers.

Between the depth of the menu, the authenticity of preparation, and the reliability of their catering services, this spot stands out as more than just another curry house. It feels like a neighborhood staple where recipes are respected, spices are treated seriously, and every dish reflects real culinary roots.

  • We experienced authentic south indian food at kannappa's. We have tried many Indian restaurants in and around LA, But this one has authentic home (Indian )flavors. We ordered onion samosas and bajji - both were freshly made and tasted just like back home. The bajjis had ajwain which is a lost ingredient in most Indian restaurants in the US. Also tried chicken kothu parotta- was 10/10 and the chicken curry with it was a flavor bomb, Vijayawada chicken biryani - had fresh mint and ghee flavors, tamarind rice(was on the house, very generous as he shared what was additional from his catering service, I personally think all restaurants should do this to prevent food waste ) - had just the right amount of flavors and spice , like temple prasadham. The chef kannappa has some true magic in his hands. All food that was packed in Styrofoam boxes had a banana leaf underneath which gives its own flavor to the food and helps with heat of the food. We will definitely visit this place Everytime we make it to LA. IF you are looking for authentic south indian food- this is the place.

  • Food Made with Love, Served with Heart Some places feed your stomach **Kannappa feeds your soul. I discovered this little catering gem during a time I needed warmth the most, and ever since, every meal from them has felt like a gentle embrace. Their food isn’t just delicious it’s *deeply human You can taste care in the way the curries melt into the rice, in the way the spices sing but never shout, and in the quiet love that lingers after the last bite. And the owner… what a man of *pure kindness and grace. He doesn’t just run a business — he shares a piece of his heart with every order. Once, when I was running late to pick up my food, he waited with a smile, worried only that my dinner might get cold. That’s not service that’s **humanity in action. Kannappa Catering isn’t just the *best in California it’s a reminder that the greatest ingredient is compassion. Every tray, every takeaway, is proof that love really can be tasted. *From a grateful woman who found comfort, care, and home in Kannappa’s cooking

  • After a long Day at Disneyland, we were desperate for good authentic Indian food. And wow, these guys delivered! The food was just unbelievably good. We are from Kerala and was totally blown away by the taste. The hot n sour chicken soup, the kothu parotta, chettinad biriyani, ghee podi idly, noodles, chicken lollipop, etc all were 5 star dishes. Totally authentic. Kudos to the chef. Tears of joy were shed after tasting the food. Highly recommended.

  • We recently bumped into this hidden gem in Santa Ana while trying to find an Indian restaurant near Great Wolf Resort in Anaheim. The food was awesome - best filter coffee we have had so far, dosa and sambar was authentic, vegetable biryani was so flavorful and last but not the least, curd rice was on the house and tasted yummy! This is a catering place and they typically serve take home orders but the owner of the place was so friendly to accommodate dining in as they have a small table, I am glad we called them to check if they had dosa on the menu as they went above and beyond to let us dine in as we were in the area and didn’t know about them! Overall, best South Indian food we have had in California and it hit closer to home! A must try if you are in the area.. They are planning to open soon in San Diego which I am looking forward to!

  • Their food quality is really good! I had ordered idli, medu vada, and pulav for the party, and everyone loved it. The flavors were authentic, with that true South Indian homely taste — fresh, delicious, and comforting. Highly recommend them for any traditional gathering or pooja.
